Students refuse to put their cell phones away. School rules on cell phones are either non-existent or vague. There is no such thing as multi-tasking; research shows it takes the brain several minutes to re-focus. Students lose an incredible amount of time from learning because of their phone use in class. Their poor choices lead to low scores, missing assignments, and consequently, poor grades. Teachers also lose time from teaching because we stop class to remind students to put their phones away. The consequences need to be severe if classroom rules and kind reminders don't do the job.
